Hacking software and changing it to your likings has been around for quite some time now. But now, OpenMoko is redefining the hacking business. OpenMoko is allowing you to not only modify their software, but also their hardware. And this is all done with their open standardized Neo phones.
With OpenMoko, you can now design the casing for your phone together with all the software. OpenMoko provides you with a basic model, the Neo 1973», for software hacking purposes. For hardware modification, you can download their CAD file and share your design on their community portal».
At the moment they have two kits available to developers. The first is the Neo Base», for application developers. The second is the Neo Advanced», for device hacking. A consumer-ready hardware version will be made available at the end of the year, with a software version following close behind.
Update: Openmoko has made pricing details available for both their kits. The “Hacker’s Lunchbox,” is available for $250 at the end of this month. The “Standard Kit” is priced $350 it will launch this fall.
