Product Obesity

Fat products. Today they’re as much of a trend as fat children. Now you might be wondering: “I don’t see any fat products around…” Granted, it’s hard to spot the real obese products. That’s because the chubbiness is on the inside.

“…the chubbiness is on the inside.”

It comes down to this: a lot of products have an proportionally big amount of nothingness inside them. In all its relativeness, such a space should be utilized, for whatever purpose.

Most of the time products retain a certain optimum shape. But rapid technological advancements result in smaller components. At

the end this product is packed with a casing, in most cases a point not given the attention it deserves, thus empty spaces are growing, making the product fat. Light, yet fat.

“…ever sneezed and lost your ipod?”

Products don’t need to shrink at the same pace as their internals. Just imagine a mouse the size of your fingernail. Nonetheless, there are lots of products that could loose weight.

Regardless, you can’t just trim away what you consider to be fat, there are certain guidelines to follow. Putting a product on the best possible diet will only result into something so tiny, it destroys its own usability, ever sneezed and lost your ipod?

Engineers need to start tightly collaborating with designers. This will result into slimmer products, less empty spaces and more style.

Today it’s all about design. Trying not to sound too much the Apple-fanboy, but the Macbook Air is good example of engineers and designers joining forces. Too bad it’s not the most functional laptop around.
